About the area of KyotoiThe new city, Heian-kyō (平�?京 "tranquility and peace capital"), became the seat of Japan's imperial court in 794, beginning the Heian period of Japanese history, named after Chinese word for capital city, jingdu (京�?�). In Japanese, the city has been called Kyo (京), Miyako (�?�) or Kyo no Miyako (京の�?�). In the 11th century, the city was renamed Kyoto ("capital city").[2] Kyoto remained Japan's capital until the transfer of the government to Edo in 1868 at the time of the Imperial Restoration. (Some believe that it is still a legal capital: see Capital of Japan.) After Edo was renamed Tokyo (meaning "Eastern Capital"), Kyoto was known for a short time as Saikyo (西京 Saikyō, meaning "Western Capital"). |

Apple House is a comfortable, well furnished property in lovely Shugakuin, Kyoto City. Rather than staying in a hotel, guests can experience a typical Japanese house in a peaceful, yet very convenient neighborhood of Kyoto. Supermarkets, bakeries and other amenities are all within easy walking distance, as are bus and train services to other parts of Kyoto. We provide two bicycles ( with baskets ) so that guests can discover parts of the city that regular guided tours will not reveal. Some shrines and temples are very close by, and the excellent number 5 bus service takes you south along past the Silver Pavilion, Kyoto Handicraft Center, Nanzenji, Heian Shrine, Gion and through the congested city center to Kyoto Station. The owners live close by and speak both English and Japanese. Guests are met at a convenient station, driven to Apple House and can settle in with plenty of English information provided.
